COLORADO RIVER RUN

A float on the Colorado River!

October 23-25, 2020

Fee: $20

Location: West Wetlands Park, Yuma, AZ

Open to all Scouts BSA and Venture Scouts  (Cubs cannot do these canoe activities)

Come join the adventure of canoe and fellowship with patrol competition!

Units arrive Friday night and set up camp.  Saturday morning, we will feed you breakfast and then give some basic paddle training, have some fun loading and unloading canoes and then its off to a 15-mile float down the Colorado.  Lunch will be provided mid-float.  After the float there will be a service project and then a cooking competition featuring BACON!  For Scouts that cannot meet the Canoe requirements, they can work on a variety of Rank Advancements and other activities available in camp.  Saturday Dinner and Sunday breakfast are the Unit responsibility.  Saturday Dinner will include the competition and the “secret” ingredient.

Requirements:

Only a couple of the Canoe Merit Badge requirements are covered here.  The goal is to have a fun canoe experience.  Most Scouts can participate with a little training that we will provide. Prior Canoe experience for Scouts is not required.

1. Swimming is not required for Scouts to participate. Completed First Class swimming requirements are helpful.
2. Units must have a Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat trained leader (Available On-Line)
3. Units should have a CPR Trained Leader. (Contact Roy Hollis for Training Options.)

Units do not need to provide any canoe equipment or life vests, but they should be prepared to be able to:

Load basic Patrol equipment in a water-proof way and tie it down properly for a for a day trip down the river.
Be prepared for a float, i.e. dressed accordingly, sun block, water bottles, etc.

The Cooking Competition:

Patrols will make an entree, side dish, and desert at Saturday dinner. Each dish will use the “secret ingredient”- BACON. Each patrol should make enough for themselves and three judges. Don’t forget the BACON!
