Climbing Instructor Level 1 Training (Certification)

Climbing Instructor Level 1 Training
This fun training course is for volunteers who have climbing and rappelling interest and would like to assist in Unit and Council-sponsored activities as Scouting America-certified Climbing Level-1 Instructors (at least 18 years old) and Instructors–in-Training (minimum 16 years old). You will learn how to assess and help set up a climbing activity site and conduct safe bouldering, climbing, and rappelling events in accordance with Scouting America guidelines. In addition, you will learn how to supervise and administer the technical aspects of the preparation, activity planning, warm-up, safety, bouldering, spotting, anchoring systems, belaying set-ups, top roping systems, belaying practice, self-rescue, climber rescue techniques, and supervising climbing or rappelling activities, including teaching Climbing Merit Badge requirements. Please note that strong climbing skills are NOT required for certification, although some climbing/rappelling experience is beneficial.
The cost for the course is $65.00, and lunch will be provided on Saturday. A limited number of cabin bunks are available for Friday night on a first-come basis: email a request to the course coordinator below. All participants are responsible for their own meals Friday evening and Saturday morning. All necessary climbing equipment will be provided for use during the course. Students may bring their own marked personal climbing helmet, harness, and gloves if desired. Level I certification is valid for a period of 1 year, after which it must be renewed. Level 1 certification is a prerequisite for Level 2 certification, that will be offered late Spring/early Summer 2026. Level 2 certification is required to lead Unit-level climbing activities and is valid for 3 years.
Prerequisites:
Climb-On-Safely (online), Safeguarding Youth Training (online), Scouting America Annual Health and Medical Record (Parts A&B).
