MAKWA: Short and Long Term Backpacking Training

Event Details

Welcome to Makwa!! the President Ford Field Service Council’s newest
training to help prepare adult and youth Scout Leaders to take their
troops and crews on short and long term backpacking experiences.
Want to go to an adventure at Philmont, Isle Royale, Pictured Rocks, or
any other back country location? If so, this training will help you gain
valuable knowledge and experience from experts. We have partnered
with local outdoor stores, trail associations, and outdoor groups to
help bring the experts in to teach you about packing your backpack
properly, feet/clothing systems, backcountry first aid, menu planning,
Leave No trace, Trek Planning, Land Navigation, Water Purification, In
Camp setup, and in camp experiences.

The first weekend is an indoor session designed to help you learn some of the in and outs of weekend or long term excursion. Two weeks after will be the trip that helps you put your new knowledge to the test under the guidance of experienced guides. We will be utilizing the Manistee River Trail/North Country Trail Loop (23 miles) and the Jordan River Pathway/North Country Trail Loop (18.8 miles). Participants can also attend the indoor session only if they would like however you will not receive a credit for completing the course.

This training is open to people outside of the Boy Scouts of America for an additional $5 so feel free to share this with friends and neighbors.

Scouts will be able to earn some requirements towards Cooking, Hiking, Backpacking, and Orienteering. Please come prepared with a properly filled out blue card and proof of any previously completed requirements.
